Subject 01: Foundations of career development

This module introduces you to the concept and process of needs analysis. You will consider the needs and characteristics of a real or potential client group.

You will learn key career development theories in this module. You will be able to explain the importance of theory in quality career development practice, summarise key theories, and explain how to apply theories in practice. This module will cover both foundational and contemporary theories and address diversity considerations throughout.

The purpose of the module is to offer a summary of key considerations in career development service design. Students will be able to describe the purpose and practical matters of different modes of service delivery, including information, counselling, career education, and events. Students will describe a service delivery model that suits their actual or intended clients’ needs and their available resources. Special attention will be paid to online career development services and programs.

The purpose of the course is to introduce and explain the “connected communities” approach to career development services. Students will identify where their services sit in the broader ecosystems of support in their professional context or availability to their clients. Students will consider how interprofessional collaboration can add value to their services, while recognising the challenges that come with it.

The purpose of this module is to introduce concepts, processes, and methods of evaluation. Students will be able to describe the importance of evaluation and continuous improvement. Students will articulate intended outcomes that serve the needs of their client group and describe how they will monitor and evaluate the achievement of those outcomes.

Subject 02: The effective practitioner

The purpose of the module is to introduce students to the professional standards and associations in their region. The module will share professional standards from several jurisdictions and require students to reflect on how they will ensure that they are competent and ethical in their practice. Students will also identify the connections between professional standards and broader regulatory or organisational policies and standards, such as privacy, data security, client safety, and fair trading.

The purpose of this module is to help the student clarify their professional goals, taking into account their existing professional skills and experience, aspirations, areas of interest, and values. This module will help the student explore and consolidate their professional identity as a career development practitioner and describe a professional niche that they might aspire to.

The purpose of this module is to equip students to manage their own career and work to ensure safety and sustainability. Students will reflect on their own needs and priorities and identify strategies to maintain professional wellbeing, including supervision and professional support practices.

The purpose of this module is to assist students to assess their performance capabilities and set goals for further professional development. This will include reflecting on the standards and conventions in their actual or intended professional context, assessing themselves against typical performance criteria, and establishing a plan for ongoing professional development.

The purpose of this module is to underline the importance of lifelong learning for professional development and adherence to professional standards. The participants will identify a concrete plan for formal and informal learning which aligns with their goals, needs, and values.

Subject 03: Career trends and assessment

The purpose of this module is to explore career trends as motivating factors for career change and as opportunities for clients’ future career development. Students will explore broad trends in the labour and education market and learn how to discern myth from reality. Students will consider how people experience these trends and how career practitioners can support their clients’ career exploration, decision-making, and goal setting.

The purpose of this module is to introduce labour market information as a crucial resource for career development practitioners and their clients. Students will learn about various sources of LMI, how to find and access them, and how to assist their clients to draw actionable insights from information.

This module introduces key practical, theoretical, and ethical considerations for career assessment. Students will explore what factors career assessments target and how quantitative and qualitative approaches can be used. Students will be introduced to an integrated process of career assessment and will be required to consider ethics and diversity.

The purpose of this model is to help practitioners work with their clients to translate insights gained from career assessments into actionable goals and strategies. Students will learn to apply principles of collaborative goal setting with their clients to ensure that clients’ needs are fully understood and addressed. Students will learn to manage referrals to appropriate services and resources.

The purpose of this module is to expose students to the breadth of recruitment practices that their clients will navigate in their job searching. Students will learn about the role of technology in contemporary recruitment and explore strategies that applicants must adopt to increase their chances of success.

Subject 04: Delivering career development services

The purpose of this module is to summarise principles of best practice for career development service delivery. Students will consider different modes of delivery and how they suit different client needs. Students will also consider how theoretical foundations and principles inform the provision of career development service delivery. In particular, the module will provide guidance for quality online delivery.

The purpose of this module is to introduce or reiterate key concepts and processes of needs assessment for career education and counselling. Students will learn how to undertake basic desktop research, use intake forms and information, and conduct intake consultations as methods to gain background information and assess client needs.

The purpose of this module is to introduce the students to the principles informing key career counselling and coaching methods and the microskills that underpin all quality individual career development support.

The purpose of this module is to provide a summary of best practices in career education. Students will learn how to plan career education in the context of a broader curriculum. The students will review critical ingredients of career education and active learning methods. Students will also consider how to conduct formative and summative assessment of career education tasks.

The purpose of this module is to provide guidance on how to ensure compliance with professional and ethical standards in relation to systems and processes that support service provision. Students will consider record keeping and management, client management, compliance, and continuous improvement.
